India records 78761 new coronavirus cases

India's COVID-19 tally of cases galloped past 37 lakh on Wednesday with 78,357 new instances of the disease reported in a day, while the number of recoveries crossed 29 lakh pushing the recovery rate to 76.98 per cent, the Union health ministry data showed. Only three countries - US, Brazil and Russian Federation - have a higher count of total cases than the number of active cases in India.

In Africa, cases in Ethiopia reached "new highs", while South Africa - which has the fifth most infections globally and the highest number on the vast continent - has continued a downward trend, it said.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 10.16 lakh tests were tried on Monday and over 4.33 crore tests have been tried so far in the nation. Andhra Pradesh reported 10,368 fresh Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, taking its cumulative caseload to 4,45,139, even as 84 more persons died during the last 24 hours.

This ensured that the actual caseload of the country (8,31,124 which are under active medical care), has reduced and now comprises only 21.11 per cent of the total positive cases.

On Monday, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare made a decision to deploy high-level Central teams to four states - Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, which have been witnessing a sudden surge in the number of coronavirus cases and reporting high-mortality. The number of active cases stands at 1,894, according to Manipur's Health Department.
