TS Marcos in Gulf aiming at Louisiana, TS Laura also on way

For The First Time, Two Hurricanes May Hit The Gulf of Mexico at The Same Time

Tropical Storm Laura heads near Puerto Rico

FOX 35's Glenn Richards has the current on Tropical Storms Laura and Marco.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Marco has emerged about 180 miles (290 kilometres) southeast of Cozumel, Mexico. In addition to strong winds, numerous most risky storms in recent years have brought tremendous amounts of rain - creating new threats to people and infrastructure far inland from the coast. There's a Tropical Storm Warning for the Cuban provinces of Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin, Guantanamo, Santiago de Cuba, and Granma.

Tropical Storms Laura and Marco were both projected to approach Louisiana at or close to hurricane force just two days apart next week.

Even with a trip over the islands, Laura is still expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mexico late Monday night and early Tuesday morning as a tropical storm, tracking to the northwest, and ramping up in strength in the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The system has already triggered a hurricane watch for Cancun and other parts of Mexico's southeastern coast.

A hurricane watch was issued for Intracoastal City, Louisiana, eastward to the Mississippi-Alabama border.

Laura was centered about 95 miles (150 kilometers) east of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Sunday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (75kph).

Both storms were expected to bring 3 to 6 inches (8 to 15 centimeters) of rain to areas they were passing over or near, threatening widespread flooding across a vast region.

The hurricane center on Friday issued tropical storm warnings for the northern Leeward Islands and Puerto Rico. 'Since you simply don´t know you really need to make precautions'.

Its minimum central pressure is 1007 hectoPascal and it continues to move west, increasing its moving speed again, which is now 33 kilometers per hour.

The forecast track from the National Hurricane Center early Saturday evening takes the storm further south and west into the Gulf, possibly clipping the western Florida Keys and making a potential landfall Wednesday or Thursday anywhere from the western Florida Panhandle to near Texas.

It seems fitting for 2020 to have this type of twin threats, said University of Miami hurricane researcher Brian McNoldy.

Unlike Hurricane Harvey, which struck the region three years ago, neither is expected to linger inland, he said, reducing risk of coastal flooding. Stay weather aware and prepare for stormy weather this week.
