Garmin Services Shut Down due to Reported Ransomware Attack

By Friday morning (July 24) several of the company's Connext services had been restored, including phone and SMS features sent via Iridium satellite devices.

Garmin acknowledged that it was facing an outage in a series of tweets from its official Twitter handle.

Garmin, which makes GPS-enabled fitness trackers and navigational software, is suffering what it has described as an "outage".

In April, Garmin reported strong revenue and operating income growth for Q1 2020.

The group, based in Olathe, Kansas, said it was working to restore service as quickly as possible.

Garmin took to Twitter to post about the incident, revealing that apart from the website and the mobile app, its call centers were affected. It's preventing pilots from downloading the current version of Garmin's air travel database on their systems, which is required by the FAA.

The services of wearable gadgets and smart fitness devices maker Garmin Ltd got disrupted after the company presumably became a victim of a ransomware attack.

Additionally, the site stated that Garmin has "no indication" that the outage affected "data, including activity, payment or other personal information". The incident significantly impacted some Garmin customers who rely on the Garmin Connect service to sync data. The Garmin Pilot app, which is used to schedule and plan flights, was also hit by the attack. CyberScoop could not independently confirm if WastedLocker had targeted Garmin.

The company says it can't receive any calls, emails, or online chats. At the time of writing, services provided through Garmin Connect were still down, according to the company's status website.

"Garmin's infrastructure has suffered a massive failure, and although the company has not officially confirmed it, the finger of suspicion points strongly in the direction of a ransomware attack", wrote security consultant Graham Cluley. According to ZDNet, the ransomware in question might be a new strain called WastedLocker.

"There is really no other event that would be likely to cause such widespread disruption and cause a company to immediately shut down everything from its online services to its production line", Callow said. Garmin is now dealing with all of those things.
