The Jacksonville, Fla., component of the Republican Nationwide Convention has been canceled, President Trump declared on Thursday, as conditions of the coronavirus keep on to spike across that point out.
This has resulted in Trump belatedly encouraging the use of masks and now him pulling a stunning about-face and canceling a convention he ordered for the sole objective of having a massive crowd without burdensome virus-related restrictions.
Those delegates were to be flown to Jacksonville after voting to attend a number of in-person events planned around the city, many of them at outside venues, but those events will now be replaced with what Trump called "tele-rallies" or online events.
After deciding to move the celebratory aspects of the convention out of North Carolina, Jacksonville was likely attractive to GOP officials because it was the only city under consideration as a backup to Charlotte that has a Republican mayor in a state with a governor from the same party. Still, some low-profile meetings connected to the RNC were expected to take place in North Carolina.
Trump said on Thursday he informed his team that his focus was on protecting the American people, even though aides advised him they could make an in-person convention safe.

He said he would still deliver a convention speech but in a "different form".
The convention was originally scheduled to be held in Charlottesville in North Carolina. Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said the campaign will still "provide exciting, informative, and enthusiastic programming so Republicans can celebrate the re-nomination of President Trump and Vice President Pence".
"The timing is not right, just not right with what happened recently with a flare up in Florida", Trump said.
"We appreciate President Donald Trump considering our public health and safety concerns in making this incredibly hard decision".
Democrats will hold an nearly entirely virtual convention August 17-20 in Milwaukee using live broadcasts and online streaming, according to party officials.

"I think we'll do it well", Trump continued.
"It's hard for us to say we should have a lot of people packed into a room and then other people shouldn't do it", he said.
The president said that Florida officials had not asked him to cancel the convention.
Trump's rival for the presidency, Democrat Joe Biden, blasted his handling of the pandemic in a campaign video aired on Thursday.
Don Huizenga, a Republican delegate from Minnesota, was excited about going just two weeks ago, but changed his mind after seeing the growing coronavirus numbers in Florida. The list of donors to the now-canceled event reads like a who's who of industry titans, power brokers and wealthy Republicans.
