The site Blockchain.com, which monitors transactions made in cryptocurrencies, said a total of 12.58 bitcoins, worth nearly $116,000, had been sent to the addresses mentioned in the fraudulent tweets.

A number of prominent Twitter accounts, including those of Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Elon Musk, appear to have been compromised Wednesday, posting messages tied to a cryptocurrency scam.

Several high-profile Twitter accounts were hacked simultaneously on Wednesday - some with millions of followers - for a cryptocurrency scam. Jack Dorsey, Twitter's CEO, hasn't commented on the situation.

In a tweet overnight, Twitter said: "We detected what we believe to be a coordinated social engineering attack by people who successfully targeted some of our employees with access to internal systems and tools".

Some of the accounts affected include Bill Gates, Elon Musk, Apple, Kanye West, and Jeff Bezos.

Twitter has been ablaze over the past two hours as notable accounts within and outside of the crypto space have tweeted suspicious messages. This alone strongly implies that someone - or a dedicated group - has either gained access to a Twitter employee's administrative privileges, or found a serious security loophole in Twitter's login process. This one was also promptly deleted, followed by another scam tweet - posted minutes later.

"Like many others, our @Uber account was hit by a scammer today".

A Twitter spokesperson told Business Insider that the matter was "being looked into". At the time of writing, both Binance and Bitcoin still had a tweet promoting the scam. The account has transferred out approximately half that amount, but experts cautioned that scammers sometimes appear to distribute money so that their accounts appear legitimate. Screenshots of this tool (shared around on Twitter) showed hackers how to take advantage of this tool.
