Statistics Canada said the economy added 488,000 full-time and 465,000 part-time positions in June. It's down 42,900 from February, the last month before restrictions to contain the virus began choking the economy.

The economic reboot generated 953,000 jobs last month, almost double the estimates by analysts, who had expected on average about 550,000 new jobs.

Approximately 2.5 million Canadians were unemployed in June, a decrease of 167,000 (-6.4 per cent) from May but more than double the February level (1.1 million), Statistics Canada reported.

The information, culture and recreation industry saw an increase of 60,000 jobs in the sector for June while business, building, and other support services also saw an increase of 71,000 jobs in June.

Despite more people re-entering the workforce, more people were also looking for work.

The unemployment rate fell to 12.3 per cent in June after hitting a record-high of 13.7 per cent in May.

Statistics Canada noted that the increase in labour force participation was not equal in men and women, with men seeing greater gains in the participation rate. In June, 33,600 people were working.

Friday's jobs report joins "a growing number of economic indicators that have been less-bad than feared early in the economic recovery", Royal Bank of Canada economist Nathan Janzen said.

As restrictions eased, the number of people participating in the labour force grew by about 786,000 after May's 491,000 gain, bringing those considered in the labour force to within 443,000 of its pre-pandemic level.
