Police said the man crashed his truck through the iron gates of the sprawling Rideau Hall estate at 1 Sussex Drive at 6:30am on Thursday. The suspect was scheduled to appear for a bail hearing in Ottawa. The man was then spotted separately by RCMP security detail on the grounds. Police, who said he's facing multiple charges, believe he was acting alone.

The RCMP have not provided a motive for Thursday's incident, but have said that neither Payette nor Trudeau were present at the time.

Duheme said when Mounties first saw the man they could have easily rushed up to him, but instead looked for a safe spot to speak with him. The RCMP said the intruder was "rapidly contained" by RCMP members on patrol.
