L.A. County to Close Beaches During 4th of July Weekend

"The rising patient volume in our hospitals will likely fill all of the intensive care unit beds that are now available", County Health Public Services Director Dr. Christina Ghaly said. "We'll be closing off parking to those beaches as well for the Fourth of July".

The closures begin at 12:01 a.m. on Friday and end at 5 a.m. on the following Monday.

"Particularly on the Fourth of July when there were fireworks.it looked like sardines in a can", Mayor Pro Tem Steve Dicterow said this week.

"The fast increases in cases, positivity rates and hospitalizations are cause for all of us to have great concerns", she said.

On Wednesday, Seal Beach followed with its own decision to close beaches, beach parking lots, volleyball courts, the pier and restrooms.

Museums, cinemas, theatres, bingo halls, galleries and other cultural outlets have also been given the green light. Indoor gatherings are now limited to 50 people with social distancing, while up to 200 people can gather outside.


Newport Beach Fire Chief Jeff Boyles said his division still has adequate staffing but would be "stretched pretty thin". Yakima County has 7,128 cases and 159 deaths while Snohomish County has 3,535 cases and 171 deaths. The alarming uptick also prompted the county government to ban all fireworks displays and close the county's beaches. "We don't want that situation".

Los Angeles County remains the epicenter of the outbreak in the state-making up roughly more than half of new transmissions in California.

The order comes as the county announced 2,903 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, the single largest one-day case count since the pandemic began in March. The daily tally brings the total number of cases in Orange County to 14,413, with 345 deaths. According to Public Health, the cumulative positivity rate has increased from 8 percent to 9 percent, and the seven-day average of the daily positivity rate has increased from the lowest daily rate of 4.6 percent positivity in late May to 8.4 percent today.
