Governor Recommends Closing Santa Barbara and Ventura County Bars

Both Los Angeles and neighboring Riverside County, which reported that its hospitals are at 99 percent of their capacity, were on Newsom's order Sunday of counties that must close bars to regain control over the virus.

But at least two of those on the lists - Fresno and Stanislaus counties in the more conservative eastern part of the state - refused to follow the order or recommendation.

The announcement on from the California Department of Public Health says, "Whereas other industries and establishments were permitted to open with modifications in Stage 2, bars are in Stage 3 because they pose the highest risk of all sectors allowed to open so far. That's why it is critical we take this step to limit the spread of the virus in the counties that are seeing the biggest increases", Newsom wrote in a statement.

Newsom's regular press briefings continue Monday following a busy week and a notable uptick in statewide coronavirus cases.

Newsom said he wants Imperial County in Southern California to reimpose a stay-at-home order amid a surge in positive coronavirus tests.

The actions defined in the guidance include the closure of brewpubs, breweries, bars, and pubs, unless they are offering sit-down, dine-in meals. Bars often have many groups of people mixing, and alcohol consumption can impair bar-goers' judgment and cause them to ignore social distancing precautions, such as staying 6 feet from one another and wearing masks. Wear a face covering and keep physically distant outside the home. "Bars are generally louder environments requiring raised voices leading to the greater projection of droplets".
