Grand Jury Indicts Three Men Accused Of Murdering Ahmaud Arbery

Soon after, William "Roddie" Bryan Jr., 50, who videotaped the shooting that took place on February 23, was also arrested and charged with murder.

Kevin Gough, a lawyer for Bryan, has said his client was just a witness. Bryan blocked Arbery from the rear with his vehicle and the McMichaels cut him off from the front in their pickup trucks, according to testimony by Dial. Bryan allegedly joined in the chase to capture the incident on video.

Holmes was appointed to lead the case after multiple other prosecutors recused themselves due to personal ties to the defendants.

Under Georgia law, a felony murder charge means that a death occurred during the commission of an underlying felony and doesn't require intent to kill.

Arbery was shot and killed by Travis McMichael on February 23 in an incident that involved McMichael's father, Gregory, a retired police officer, and family friend William Bryan.

The McMichaels pursued Arbery, who was out for his daily jog, after telling police officers they suspected he had committed a burglary, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

"The Grand jury looked at the facts and found compelling evidence to bring malice and felony murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment charges against Ahmaud Arbery's killers", Arbery's family lawyer Benjamin Crump said in a statement obtained by MadameNoire.

Holmes said they were able to call in a grand jury that had been impaneled prior to the judicial emergency. They assembled at the Glynn County Courthouse in the larger jury assembly room, rather than the typical grand jury room, Holmes said, to maintain safe distancing. Bryan, who filmed the killing, was later charged, as well. "While we disagree with it, it's an important step in the process to moving this case closer to the speedy trial that Roddie has demanded". Local law enforcement officials have debunked their theory.

Holmes said she has been in contact with the U.S. Department of Justice, however, and that agency is still weighing federal hate crimes charges.
