Beijing goes into ‘wartime mode’ as virus emerges at market in Chinese capital

China reported 57 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, the highest daily figure since April, as concerns grow about a resurgence of the disease.

Then on Friday, it announced that two quality control workers at the state-owned China Meat Food Research Center who had visited Xinfadi and five other markets in the city to check on standards had also tested positive.

Despite being the site of the first major coronavirus outbreak - with the first reported cases tied to a wet market in the central city of Wuhan - China's Government has since loudly promoted its apparent success in controlling Covid-19's spread.
