With Games in doubt, U.S. Olympics prepares for 'variety of outcomes'

The letter came on the same day as USA Swimming formally asked for the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be postponed.

The president of Team USA Swimming has fired off a letter to the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee strongly urging for the 2020 Games to be postponed 1 year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Everyone has experienced unimaginable disruptions, mere months before the Olympic Games, which calls into question the authenticity of a level playing field for all", Hinchey said.

In a statement, Swimming Canada CEO Ahmed El-Awadi said telling athletes to prepare for an Olympic Games, which is set to take place in four months, during a global pandemic "raises serious issues".

Swimming Canada's CEO Ahmed El-Awadi followed with a statement, saying his organization shares numerous same concerns. "But this position at least provides our athletes with the comfort of knowing that they will have adequate time to properly prepare themselves physically, mentally and emotionally to be able to participate in a safe and successful Olympic Games, and that they can shift their focus toward taking care of themselves and their families".

Trump noted during the videoconference that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe "has told us that he has not made a decision as to what to do". The USOPC echoed those sentiments Friday, with Lyons saying the organization is planning for a variety of outcomes regarding the coronavirus and the Games.

Left unsaid was the impact the USOPC's voice could have in moving toward a postponement.

The US Olympic federation has remained reluctant to use its leverage - the US brings the largest contingent to every Summer Games, wins the most medals and attracts billions in broadcast rights from NBC - in talks with the International Olympic Committee.

"We are very much aligned with numerous points USA Swimming CEO Tim Hinchey has raised", said El-Awadi.

His team understands he has virtually no chance at the nomination, but they also said Mr Sanders wanted to leave on his own terms. But the hooks of that fundraising approach are swanky in-person events that allow donors close contact with a would-be president.

There are a growing number of calls for the Games not to take place this summer.

But there is also a contingent of athletes who are not speaking up as loudly on social media.

It said, athletes "don't want to go just to go", but that "they want to be at their best and compete, and they're very quickly running out of time to do that".

Eugene Liang, high-performance director for Triathlon Canada, said the current global situation has created "an environment of haves and have-nots" when it comes to athlete training.

El-Awadi says that each day that goes by without a decision from the International Olympic Committee creates more stress and anxiety for the athletes, who are expected to keep training for an event that may not even happen.
