Among the nine dead are two children and the pilot, Brule County States Attorney Theresa Maule Rossow said in a statement.

People across South Dakota had been advised against travel during stormy conditions that intensified during the Thanksgiving weekend, she said, and no landings were allowed at Chamberlain's airport when the plane went down.

Three males, ages 28, 27 and 17, managed to flee the wreckage and had been being handled at native hospitals, Brule County emergency supervisor Katheryn Benton advised the Sioux Falls Argus Chief. Their conditions have not been released and EastIdahoNews.com is not reporting their names or the names of the other fatalities at this time.

The FAA said investigators were en route to the crash site and that the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) would be in charge of the investigation. The NTSB said on Twitter it is investigating the crash. Not only were they well-known businessmen but they served in prominent positions with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including bishoprics and stake presidencies.

The area was placed under a winter storm weather warning. They were not bright, but silent, important contributors.

The plane had embarked shortly before noon from Chamberlain, South Dakota, and crashed about a mile southwest of there, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The American Meteorological Institute had forecast gusty snowfalls that "could significantly reduce visibility". Local authorities were guarding the site on Sunday.
