Evacuations ordered near Southern California wildfire

In January 2018, a downpour on recently burned slopes just east of Santa Barbara unleashed massive debris flows that devastated the community of Montecito, destroying homes and killing 23 people. Power outages were reported in unincorporated areas between Goleta and Santa Barbara cities, along Highway 154 through Mission Canyon, and in parts of nearby Summerland and Carpinteria.

The Cave Fire started burning around 4:15 p.m.in the Santa Ynez Mountains east of the intersection of State Highway 154 and East Camino Cielo Road, according to a county press release.

Weather forecasts call for winds with gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour at times into Tuesday morning, but rain is expected later in the day.

As of Tuesday morning, the fire had burned about 4,100 acres off Highway 154 after breaking out late Monday afternoon. Because Highway 154 was closed, evacuees had to come down old San Marcos, officials said.

Earlier this month, Los Padres National Forest officials announced that "Extreme Fire Danger fire restrictions will go into effect immediately and remain in effect through December 31, 2019", on the park's official website.
