Donald Trump pardons three soldiers in war crimes cases

Golsteyn's lawyer, Phillip Stackhouse, told the Post that his client would receive a full pardon in his murder trial that stems from the 2010 death of a suspected Taliban bomb-maker.

The three cases of Clint Lorance, Mathew Golsteyn and Edward Gallagher are unrelated.

Trump and the White House have been mulling over the decision for months, according to multiple news reports.

"With this completely black use of atomic powers, Trump has sent a very clear message of disrespect for law, regulation, the military justice system, and also people from the army that perish by the laws of warfare", Hina Shamsi, director of the ACLU's National Security Project, said in a statement.

The service members involved were notified by Trump over the phone, said the United States official, speaking on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.

Both were granted full pardons.

He declined to provide extra details but reported, "I do have total assurance in the military justice technique, and we'll allow things engage in out as they play out".

Edward Gallagher is accused of taking an image with a corpse and capturing two civilians in Iraq.

Golsteyn, in an interview with The Post this year, said that the man was set free because USA forces in his area weren't authorized to keep detainees.

It was also the day that his longtime political adviser and friend Roger Stone was found guilty of lying to and obstructing Congress in a case related to Trump and the release of stolen Democratic emails in 2016 by WikiLeaks.

Officials said Lorance ordered an enlisted soldier to open fire on a group of unarmed Afghans.

Nine members of Lorance's platoon testified against him during the trial.
