Twitter will bar political advertising globally on its platform, responding to growing criticism over misinformation from politicians on social media. "Paying for reach removes that decision, forcing highly optimized and targeted political messages on people".
Twitter had previously implemented rules and restrictions for political advertising.

The ban on political ads takes effect November 22, with a few exceptions, such as ads that encouraging voter registration. "All at increasing velocity, sophistication, and overwhelming scale". And paying to increase the reach of political speech has significant ramifications that today's democratic infrastructure may not be prepared to handle.
